The Blood in Your Veins Can Ease the Suffering of Others

The need for blood is constant, but we are in particularly tough times right now as the Red Cross recently announced a national blood shortage. September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and I think many people would be surprised to learn that a sickle cell patient can need up to 100 units of blood each year to treat each flare-up of the chronic condition.

Column from RMA: A Shot to Save the World

Greg Zuckerman spoke to the RMA members about his most recent book, A Shot to Save the World: The Inside Story of the Life-or-Death Race for a Covid-19 Vaccine, which recounts the efforts to develop a vaccine in a very short period of time. Historically developing a vaccine typically took eight to ten years, with four years being the fastest any prior vaccine was developed. Notably the current Covid-19 vaccines were developed amazingly in only 330 days. This article details how the vaccines were developed in less than a year.

Column from the RMA on Fred Camillo: A Champion for Progress in Greenwich

Though there is little that can be done to reduce the number of cars on the roads, Greenwich is taking steps to improve traffic safety and flow. We are exploring ways to develop additional dog parks at multiple sites in town, and make portable pickleball nets available at some tennis courts. Greenwich is working to increase the amount of affordable housing using the scattered sites approach instead of concentrated large multi-unit structures.
