Richard “Dick” Cutler, a father, grandfather and uniquely relational man, passed away at aged 93 in his home on January 31 – with family and friends around him.
He was born September 29, 1929 to Richard and Aaslaug Cutler in Farsund, Norway, followed by his younger brother, Tom. The family moved to Cincinnati and then Philadelphia in 1944. Dick later graduated from Friend Select School and the University of Pennsylvania.
Most of his career was based in New York City’s publishing world, where he became a prominent figure in the ski industry, working for Skiing Magazine, Warren Miller Entertainment (producers of the pre-season movies serious skiers and snowboarders anticipated each year) and finally the Ski Industry Association.
The success of his business and personal life was demonstrated by an accumulation of so many friends across the country. Dick would pepper any correspondence with a cheeky New Yorker comic (he kept files of these). He’d also save pages of notes with friends anniversaries, birthdays, special events and leave 5-second voice messages starting with, “Cutler here…” He cared and loved well in his signature way.
Dick met and married Eileen McKenna in Brooklyn Heights in 1958. With their two children, Kate and David, they moved to Old Greenwich, Connecticut were they appreciated living in beautiful Lucas Point.
Known as Bestafar (Norwegian for grandfather) by his several grandchildren, he never missed a birthday, graduation, band concert or game. With his dry humor, 6’5′ presence and cheshire grin, he’d always change the atmosphere.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Thomas Gallagher Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, on February 18 at 1:30 p.m.
