Obituary: John Serna

John V. Serna, 89, lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away on March 1, 2021 at Greenwich Hospital.

John graduated from Greenwich High School and later attended Bridgeport University. He enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and served until 1953 rising to the rank of chief petty officer aboard the destroyer Charles H. Roan during the Korean War. John saw service in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, John worked as a service manager for Putnam Motors and Chrysler Plymouth Agencies in Greenwich. He then took his managerial skills and leadership to the ARC Agency Inc. in Stamford, where he became its director of vocational services for over 20 years, helping to train young adults with developmental disabilities. During this time, he became active in Connecticut Special Olympics and served as board member. He was also the acting director of Connecticut Special Olympics for one year.

John was well known at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Glenville, where he was an usher for many years.

John is remembered by his family, friends and neighbors for a willingness to always help, his strength of will and courage when facing adversity and especially his great sense of humor and love of telling stories.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joanne, his son John V. Serna Jr., his granddaughters Emily and Hope Serna, his brother Luke Serna and his sister Mother David Serna of the Abbey of Regina Laudis. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Serna.
