Late Thursday afternoon, just before 4 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the Thruway Shopping Center located at 1233 E. Putnam Ave. in Riverside on the report of a motor vehicle that had crashed into a building which houses a Verizon store and Greenwich Medical Spa. A fire subsequently resulted, and units from Stamford also responded to assist at the scene.

According to the Greenwich Police Department, the driver of the vehicle has died, and there are no reports of other injuries or fatalities.

The Greenwich Fire Department has contained the fire, and will now be turning over the scene to the GPD. The Thruway Shopping Center will remain closed.

First Selectman Fred Camillo mentioned the incident on Facebook.

“Our public safety units, led by Greenwich’s Bravest, the GFD, with support provided by the GPD and GEMS, responded quickly and effectively,” Camillo said. “Sadly, we lost a person in this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the man’s family at this difficult time.”

We’ll update with more information as it becomes available.
