Choral Society Announces Scholarship Winners

Greenwich Choral Society announces Emily Hoffman of Fairfield and Matthew Sullivan of Old Greenwich as recipients of the 2020 Nathalie Rutherford Scholarship Award. They were honored at the Choral Society’s 2020 virtual Annual Meeting.

Emily Hoffman is a senior at Fairfield Warde High School and will be graduating in June. She is a section leader in Fairfield Warde’s Bel Canto Choir, in the Treble Choir, in the Concert Choir, and in the Muse and Overtones A Capella group. She has also served as President of the Fairfield County Children’s Choir Chamber Singers. Her theater experience includes serving as the Student Assistant Director of the McKinley Elementary School Drama Club and as a member of the Fairfield Prep Players.

She is the recipient of a number of awards including; The Connecticut Association of Schools Outstanding Arts Award, the National Association of Music Education all-Eastern Honors Choir, the Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State Honors Choir and Western Region Honors Choir, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the Fairfield Warde High School Excellence in Music Award and Music Scholar Award.

Hoffman will attend the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus, and intends to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and a Master’s Degree in Music for a career as a private voice teacher.

Matthew Sullivan is a senior at Greenwich High school and, following graduation, will attend Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He is a member of the Greenwich High School Chamber Singers and has participated in a number of honor choirs including; the Western Region Choir, the Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State Honors Choir, and the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Mixed Choir and All-National Honors Choir.

Sullivan’s also played the role of Harry McAfee in the Greenwich High School production of ‘Bye-Bye Birdie’ and was slated to be a soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy in the Greenwich High School/Greenwich Choral Society Concert ‘Beethoven 2020’, that was canceled due to the coronavirus.

Sullivan plans to continue to sing in multiple choirs at Washington University and to continue voice lessons with the possibility of minoring in music.

The Greenwich Choral Society sponsors the competition for the annual Nathalie Rutherford Scholarship Award of $3,000. Any senior attending school in Fairfield or Westchester County who intends to pursue further study in vocal or choral music is encouraged to apply.
