Letter: Service in Scouting and Government

lettertotheeditor

To the Editor,

On November 1st, the Webelos Scouts in Cub Scout Pack 35 in Glenville had a special opportunity to meet with Representative Livvy Floren. The Webelos are currently working on requirements to earn their Arrow of Light, the highest rank in Cub Scouts that will prepare them to become Boy Scouts.

Rep. Floren opened the meeting by reflecting on service to the community, a bond she shares as an elected official with the Scouts, who regularly serve our community as volunteers. Rep. Floren discussed how she first became interested in her role as State Representative, with emphasis on the satisfaction she receives from helping her constituents. She discussed the process of becoming an elected official, including the important right our citizens have to vote in next week’s election.

The Scouts came prepared with questions too. One noteworthy question from Sam Arcuri was about how our government protects children, which prompted discussion about school safety and public health laws and policies, including those related to providing children with nutritious meals and requiring inoculations. Rep. Floren also discussed how legislation is passed in the Capitol, using an illustrative example of introducing a law to protect animals. As the meeting came to a close, Jack Lindberg asked how the Scouts can better help the community. Rep. Floren highlighted the many impactful contributions Scouting has made to Greenwich, including youth development, flag ceremonies and countless volunteer hours.
