Bergstein Announces Candidacy for State Senate

Alexandra Bergstein

Greenwich resident Alexandra Bergstein announced that she will run for the District 36 State Senate seat in Hartford. Bergstein, 51, is a resident of Greenwich, a mother, a corporate lawyer turned community advocate, and a doctoral candidate at Yale. She is challenging incumbent Republican Scott Frantz, who is serving his fifth term. District 36 is comprised of back-country Stamford, part of New Canaan and all of Greenwich.

“I’m running because I believe there is a growing disconnect between what our community cares about, and the actions of our state legislature,” said Bergstein. “We need leadership that represents our values and puts Principle over Party to make decisions that serve the long-term best interest of our children and our State.”

Bergstein’s campaign, the theme of which is Unite for Connecticut, focuses on bringing people together for the greater good of Connecticut – and calls for accountability from both sides of the political aisle. She stands for fiscal responsibility and social progress, asserting that voters can have both and don’t need to choose one over the other.

“The fiscal crisis is our number one priority as a state. We need to focus on formulating a non-partisan plan that incorporates practical and proven strategies to reduce our state’s debt and increase its revenue, while keeping taxes low.  However, we cannot sacrifice the progress we’ve made on issues such as the Environment, Gun Safety and Women’s Equality. These policies create the culture of CT, which is why we choose to live here. It is our responsibility to stand up, regardless of party, and defend our principles and progressive culture. We need to keep moving forward and not allow our rights to be rolled back as they are being rolled back in Washington. We can’t let Hartford become a mirror image of the toxic partisanship and dysfunction we see in DC. In the past, CT was a leader on social and environmental issues and we need to ensure continued progress on all the issues we care about.”

Bergstein captured the Democratic Party nomination May 21, at the Greenwich Democratic Convention and will be running as their chosen representative on Nov. 6.
