Now through Sept. 30, in preparation for back to school, Splurge Unique Gifts, Home Décor and Jewelry is collecting healthy snacks for children staying at Kids in Crisis to enjoy during and after school. Splurge owner, Sonia Sotire Malloy is happy to provide a convenient downtown location for members of the community to donate individually packaged, healthy, shelf-stable snacks for the residents at Kids in Crisis, the Cos Cob-based emergency shelter and community resource. Some examples of the types of snacks needed include individually packaged nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, crackers, applesauce, fruit cups, popcorn, pretzels and low sugar cookies.

Malloy shared, “I am truly excited to launch this new program to support Kids in Crisis and I hope that we will make this an annual tradition, similar to the Easter Basket Collection that we host every year.” When asked why snacks, Malloy responded, “I was interested in helping to make the back to school experience smoother for kids who are going through a difficult time as they make the transition to a new school year. I contacted Kids in Crisis to see how we could help, and they indicated that they need shelf-stable snacks to give to the kids. Remembering looking forward to snacks in my lunch or at home after a long school day, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved.” Malloy added, “I am hopeful that our wonderful community will rally, as they always have, to support this initiative to help children in need.”

Shari Shapiro, Executive Director at Kids in Crisis, says, “It is important to send our kids with nutritious snacks when they go to school. With the academic year just around the corner, we are so grateful for the school snack collection hosted by Sonia and Splurge. Our kids will be better equipped to focus on their studies and extracurricular activities with the proper fuel, and we thank Sonia and Splurge for taking on this generous effort.”

In the event that a snack donation is not possible, Splurge will accept gift cards and monetary donations, 100% of which will be used to purchase healthy snacks. Please contact Sonia Sotire Malloy at 203-869-7600 if you have any questions about contributing to the Splurge snack collection for Kids in Crisis.

Splurge is located at 39 Lewis Street and is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
