I have known our current chief of police, Jim Heavey, since he was a patrolman and volunteer fireman. I also know his wonderful wife and kids well. I have always found Jim to be an honest, forthright and smart person. His kids are well raised and very respectful and successful. I also have known most of the chiefs of police of Greenwich in my lifetime, both good and not so good. Jim ranks among the best that I have known. If you want to know him and the entire department better, I urge you to attend the Citizens Police Academy when it next becomes available.
The Academy is a multi-week program in the evenings that focuses on all aspects of the department. One interacts with a diverse group of officers and leaders of the department and gains a valuable understanding of its role in the community. My daughter and I did so and I learned more than I thought I knew about the police and their tremendous challenges.
