A perfect spring day served as the backdrop for the Annual Greenwich/Port Chester/Rye Crop Hunger Walk at the Greenwich and Port Chester High School running tracks. This was the eighth crop walk involving the three towns and this year’s event took place on April 24.

A total of 115 walkers embarked on symbolic walk in which teams of individuals carried at least four gallons of water one and one half miles. Carrying water for a distance is not an activity most Americans are familiar with, but this year teams chose to carry water with the recognition that millions around the world, mostly women and children, must do this every day for drinking, cooking and cleaning.

Three organizations benefit from the annual walk event, Church World Service (CWS), Neighbor to Neighbor of Greenwich and Carver Center of Port Chester.

Crop Hunger Walkers raise funds to donate to these important organizations. This year participating churches from Greenwich included Christ Church Episcopalian, First Congregational, First Lutheran, First United Methodist and Second Congregational. Port Chester/Rye churches included All Souls Parish Presbyterian, Christ’s Church Episcopalian (Rye) and St. Paul’s Lutheran (Rye Brook). Participating organizations were Foust Mentoring Program at Port Chester High School, “Feed the Hungry” club at Greenwich High School, Carver Center, Kiwanis Club of Port Chester/Rye Brook, Neighbor to Neighbor and the Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich.

The walk has raised, to date, almost $9,000, well short of the $15,000 goal. But it is not too late to contribute to this important work. Contributions can be made online at crophungerwalk.org/greenwichct. Donations by check should be made out to “CWS/CROP” and mailed to “Crop Treasurer,” All Souls Parish, 55 Parkway Drive, Port Chester, NY 10573.
