May is for mothers, and The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists celebrates with special events at The Greenwich Garden Education Center beginning May 5. “Tribute to Mothers: A Springtime Portrait Exhibition” features 30 fine art portraits by select artists, free demonstrations, public reception, and a Master Workshop. The portraits include a variety of styles from classic to contemporary in drawings, pastels, and oils.

Opening festivities begin Thursday, May 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. with live portrait demonstrations by two award-winning artists and teachers: Grace DeVito and Joel Spector. Anyone can attend all or part of this free event. The public reception will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. with exhibiting artists, refreshments, and entertainment.

In conjunction with the exhibit, David Jon Kassan will conduct a Master Portrait Demonstration on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advanced techniques and his patented Parallel Palette are of particular interest to professional painters, teachers, and collectors. Space is limited. Preregistration is required: $150 per person, $120 students under 21. The exhibition remains on view May 5 to 26 at the Garden Education Center.
