The Greenwich Academy water polo team took to the waters at the Greenwich YMCA for the first game as a varsity program and they were far from intimidated.
Against Hotchkiss School, the Gators grabbed an early 5-2 lead and never looked back, picking up the school’s first varsity win by a score of 19-8.
Greenwich Academy was paced by Megan Apostolides, who led the way with seven goals. Not to be outdone was Borden Wahl, who took home five goals on the day.
Avery Pierce, who scored the first ever goal for the varsity program early in the game, finished with the hat trick. Lena Mersereau tallied two goals and both Neli Mintcheva and Sydney Heath each finished with one goal.
In net for GA was Annie Harris, who finished the game with five saves.
“We played a very effective press defense from the first quarter, which led us to counter Hotchkiss early in the game and gave us a lead of 4-1,” GA head coach Ulmis Iordache said. “Even though this is our first varsity year, I’ve already noticed very good leadership shown by our captains Megan Apostolides and Avery Pierce, and a very good team atmosphere overall. We have experienced players on our team who are nationally ranked, like Borden Wahl for example, and as a coach I cannot ask for a better base to build on.”
This weekend the Gators are headed to Williston Northampton to take on Phillips Andover and Williston Northampton.
