Greenwich Athletes Excel With Greens Farms Academy

Greens Farms Academy had help from some Greenwich-based athletes during last week’s schedule of events.

The boys fencing teams competed against Hopkins School and St. John’s Prep on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Hopkins. GFA lost 11-17 against Hopkins and 6-21 against St. John’s Prep.

In foil, GFA lost to Hopkins School foil with a final score of 5-4. Sophomore Teddy Gartland (Darien) won all of his bouts, finishing the round 3-0. Sophomore Matt Jackmauh (Old Greenwich) went 1-2, and sophomore Chili Hopkins (Old Greenwich) went 0-2. Freshman Willem Schuddeboom (Darien) went 0-1. Against St. John’s, Gartland went 2-1, while Jackmauh went 1-2, Schuddeboom went 0-2 and Hopkins went 0-1.

In boys basketball actions, the Dragons rallied back from a 14-point deficit to beat undefeated Hopkins School 63-62. Then on Saturday, Greens Farms gave up a late lead and lost to Rye Country Day 73-71.

Against Hopkins junior Elvin Rodriguez (Darien) had 20 points and five assists. Senior Dom Cristiano, Jr. (Valhalla, N.Y.) had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Sunday Okeke (Darien) had eight points, 11 rebounds, five steals and five assists. Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) had 10 points and four steals. Junior Evan Roteman (Westport) broke the Hopkins press, scored, rebounded assisted, and stole multiple times.

The GFA stat leaders for the Rye game: Okeke had 18 points, 18 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals. Rodriguez had 17 points. Sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) had six assists, and Isaac Manton had five steals.
