About Hortulus

HORTULUS, which means “little garden” in Latin, was founded in 1930 by Elizabeth Hyde Brownell and friends in Greenwich, Connecticut. The purpose of Hortulus is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening and creative design; to protect, restore and improve the quality of the environment through education, programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement.

TODAY, our membership is made up of women who share a love for all things gardening. We are master gardeners, novice gardeners, conservationists, artists, photographers, floral designers, community volunteers, civic leaders, teachers and so much more.
