Jury Duty is as bemoaned in the US of A as a flat tire or rush hour traffic. “Ugh. Jury duty.”
I am here to remind everyone that jury duty is as much a requirement of living in the United States as a privilege. While the country has been suffering its fair share of tumult recently, and fair questions are being asked of our government– one thing that is not up for discussion is the Sixth Amendment, the “right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury.”
Think about that for a moment. Really. We have the right to a trial by jury of our peers. When you get a jury summons you now have the opportunity to decide the fate of another person based on your impartial judgment and the presentation of the facts. Wow. What an honor.
When you get your jury summons, you should say a thank you and put on a happy face. While you might have to miss a day of work, one day it could be you sitting there in a public trial, being tried by an impartial jury.
