At the June 7 meeting of the Greenwich Retired Men’s Association, Bob Phillips introduced the speaker, Larry Kantor, partner at Atlas Capital, a private equity firm.
Forecasts for a US recession are rampant following the greatest policy tightening in over 40 years. But it hasn’t happened yet and – absent an unexpected catastrophic event –– is unlikely to occur anytime soon. The COVID experience – which generated unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus and a historic labor shortage – has cushioned the economy, preventing a collapse. The end result is an extended period of sluggish growth instead of a traditional recession. Inflation peaked last summer and should continue to decline, but not enough to reach the Fed’s target of 2% anytime soon. As a result, the Fed is likely to remain on hold for an extended period instead of cutting rates this year as the markets are pricing in. The period of ultra-low inflation and interest rates is over, and we will need to get used to it. A lively Q&A session followed the talk.

He was a 2016 advanced Leadership Institute fellow at Harvard University following his retirement as managing director and global head of research at Barclays, where he was responsible for global research, including economics, equities, interest rates, foreign exchange, emerging markets, credit, and commodities. He was also a member of the investment bank executive committee and made numerous media appearances, including CNBC, Bloomberg TV and radio, and The Nightly Business Report. Prior to working at Barclays, Larry held several positions of increasing responsibility in academia, at the Federal Reserve Board and in the financial industry. The RMA’s upcoming presentation, “Prostate Disease, Complexities of Cancer Detection and Treatment,” a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Jeffrey Puglisi, is scheduled for 10:45 AM on Wednesday, June 21st. Four doctors affiliated with Greenwich Hospital will discuss various aspects of prostate cancer, the second most common form of cancer in men after skin cancer. It is highly treatable if detected early, and the death rate from it has declined substantially over the past 30 years. Nevertheless, approximately 35,000 die from it each year in the U.S.
Moderating the discussion will be Jeffrey Puglisi, MD, president of the Greenwich Medical Society and also affiliated with Glenville Medical Concierge Care. Panelists are Bruce McGibbon, MD, associate professor of Clinical Therapeutic Radiation and medical director of Greenwich Hospital Radiation Oncology; Daniel Petrylak, MD, professor of medicine (Medical Oncology) and urology and chief, Genitourinary Oncology, Smilow Cancer Center; and Michael Karellas, MD, assistant professor, Department of Urology.
Topics for discussion will include prostate cancer symptoms vs. benign prostate enlargement; various methods of screening and testing for prostate cancer, including blood tests, biopsy, MRI imaging and genetic markers; therapeutic approaches, including active surveillance/watchful waiting, surgery, radiation, androgen deprivation therapy, and combination therapies; the role of prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests; side effects of present treatments, and potential outcomes of watchful waiting; and opportunities for prevention. Note the special start time, this week only.
