Memorial Day, often considered the informal commencement of the summer season, is a significant day in Old Greenwich, CT, not solely as a festive occasion, but also as a time to honor and pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Amid the customary parades and community events, the inhabitants of Greenwich are encouraged to reflect on the profound significance of this solemn holiday.

“In essence, Memorial Day marks the start of the summer season, but the essence of this day lies in the act of remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in the line of duty defending our nation,” wrote Jim Heavey, the Chief of Police and a military veteran, in a past Memorial Day article for the Sentinel.

Resonating with the words of former President John F. Kennedy, who stated, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them,” Chief Heavey underscored the importance of remembering those lost from Greenwich, noting that they “not only symbolize a fallen service member but also epitomize the noble sacrifice made by their families and the community they hailed from.”

Originally referred to as Decoration Day and originating in the aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1971. The holiday is distinct from Veterans Day, which pays tribute to all who have served in the military. Memorial Day is primarily a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
