Happy Friday the 13th!

POLICE AND FIRE
This past weekend, Greenwich Fire Department Engines 1 and 3 responded to a car fire on Hamilton Avenue Downtown. No injuries were reported and the scene was turned over to the Fire Marshals division.

Last friday, a mail carrier was robbed on Lake Avenue at about 11:30 am. No injuries were reported and no weapons were involved. GPD is looking for a white Mercedes Benz with New York plates KZB-7216. The vehicle was last seen traveling south on Field Point Road towards I-95. GPD added that the vehicle was now in New York State. GPD is asking anyone with information to call 203-622-8004.

Another Reminder About Locking Your Car
The Greenwich Police Department is once again reminding residents to lock their cars. Always remember to lock your cars, even at home. Also remember not to leave your keys or fobs in your cars.

January is Radon Action Month
Throughout January, the Greenwich Department of Health is offering a reduced fee for residents to test for radon in the air and water in their home. The test kits are available for $42 and are available at the Department of Health’s laboratory on the ground floor of Town Hall Monday – Friday between 8am and 3pm People can find out more information by calling the laboratory during those hours at 203-622-7843.

Department of Public Works Information Meeting
Following the impacts of Tropical Storm Ida, the Department of Public Works (DPW) reviewed several areas in Town for alternatives to reduce the impacts of future storms, including studying the Brothers Brook drainage area. The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works is hosting a public information meeting regarding the Brothers Brook drainage area on January 19th at 5 pm in the Town Hall Meeting Room to share the status of the study, preliminary alternatives that are being explored, and next steps.

Cannabis Retail Sales Have Begun in Connecticut
Cannabis sales in Connecticut for recreational use for those aged 21 and over began this past Tuesday, January 10th at several licensed retailers. The cannabis industry is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to CT.

Greenwich Reaches Settlement On Byram Marina Complaint
The United States Attorney’s Office has reached a settlement with the town of Greenwich in order to resolve allegations that the Byram Marina was not operating in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A complaint was made by an individual with disabilities who claimed that the marina has no designated accessible boat slips and no accessible routes to the boat slips. Due to the settlement, Greenwich is now making improvements to the marina, including improving its accessibility.

Business – Freccia Bros Celebrates 100th Year
Last Thursday, First Selectman Fred Camillo delivered a proclamation to congratulate Freccia Bros Garage on 100 years of service. The business began in 1922 repairing and painting horse carriages. After plenty of time and five generations, Freccia Bros now specialize in antique Volkswagon restoration and repaires.

Couple Donates Lead Gift for Greenwich Hospital’s New Adolescent Behavioral Health Program
Greenwich residents Richard and Ellen Richman have Greenwich donated a lead gift toward Greenwich Hospital’s Adolescent Behavioral Health Outpatient Program. In order to inspire people to donate, the Richmans will match any gifts dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million. The opening of the new facility is planned for summer of this year.

Patriots Foundation Honors Greenwich’s Christine Lai
The New England Patriots Foundation and Gillette have recognized 17 local volunteers over the course of the season with the “Patriots Difference Maker of the Week Award.” Honorees have been celebrated for their exemplary support support of nonprofit organizations in New England. Christine Lai was chosen as a 2022 Patriots Difference Maker of the Week for her dedication to the Special Education Legal Fund (SELF), the NE Patriots Foundation will present a $5,000 donation to SELF as a part of Lai’s award.

American Red Cross Red and White Ball Honorees
This year at the Red Cross’s annual Red and White Ball General Eric M. Smith, 36th Assistant Commandant of the United States Marine Corps is being honored with the Exceptional Service Award, Pam Farr is being honored with the Humanitarian Award and the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association is being honored with the Corporate Leadership Award.

WMS Soil Remediation
The Board of Selectmen is currently prioritizing the remediation of Western Middle School’s playing fields. The state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and Connecticut Environmental Protection Agency held a public hearing on thai past Wednesday, if you missed it you can send thoughts on the WMS Fields to CT DEEP’s Remediation Project Manager Jeffrey Wilcox at jeff.wilcox@ct.gov.

Eagle Hill School Raises $700 Towards Dog Refuge
The Eagle Hill School community raised $700 to be put towards Lucky Dog Refuge, a dog rescue based in Stamford, CT. Upper school student Matthew Halsch chose Lucky Dog Refuge as part of his community service opportunity. Matthew presented the check to Director of Lucky Dog Refuge Kirstin Mende and Marketing & Business Development Manager Samantha Rumor.

Sacred Heart Greenwich Student Recognized as Regeneron Science Talent
This past Tuesday, the Society for Science released the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. Sacred Heart Student Jennifer Carmen Di Capua of the class of 2023 has been recognized as one of those 300 scholars for her project, Facilitating Healthcare Access for Latinx Immigrants Using a Novel Smartphone App. The top 40 finalists will be announced on January 24th.

State Senator Fazio’s Leadership Positions
State Senator for the 36th district, including Greenwich, New Caanan, and Stamford, Ryan Fazio was sworn-in last Wednesday at the State Capitol for the second time. He has been appointed the Ranking Member on the Energy and Technology Committee as well as the Ranking Member on the Planning and Development Committee. Fazio requested those leadership assignments due to their importance to the 36th district.

Arzeno Sworn in as State Representative
State Representative Hector Arzeno was sworn in last Wednesday at the State Capitol for his first term representing the 151st District, covering Greenwich. Representative Arzeno is serving on the Education, Environment and Higher Education, and Employment Advancement Committees for the 2023 Legislative Session.
