Greenwich Police Department Wins Battle of the Badge
The winner of the 2022 Battle of the Badges Blood Drive was the Greenwich Police Department. Stephanie Dunn Ashley presented Police Chief James Heavey with this year’s trophy. The goal was to see who could get the most pints of blood donated in their agency name. 62 volunteers came to the event to support Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, or Greenwich Fire resulting in 52 pints of blood for the American Red Cross. At the end of last week, the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Company celebrated 100 years and the Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol celebrated 95 years.
Greenwich Fire Department Assistant Chief Retires
Greenwich Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Koczak has retired. Assistant Chief Koczak served the constituents of Greenwich for over 26 years.
Increase in Number of Stolen Checks
Recently, Greenwich has seen an increase in stolen checks from mailboxes. These checks are then washed with ink-removing chemicals and rewritten to a new payee for large sums of money. GPD is working with the US Postal Inspectors and other area police departments on this matter.

2022 Turkey Trot Raises $65 Thousand
The 12th annual Turkey Trot held Saturday, November 26th raised $60,000 for Greenwich Public School programs. Two different Greenwich elementary schools received top honors in the Run for your School competition; Julian Curtiss and North Mianus School. Each school received a $500 prize which can be used to purchase physical education equipment.

Nonprofit – Neighbor to Neighbor Receives Annual Christmas Tree Delivery
Neighbor to Neighbor received their annual delivery of Christmas Trees from Acacia Lodge earlier this week courtesy of the Greenwich Free Masons. The trees are donated to families who cannot afford to get a tree.
Business & Nonprofit – New England Total Energy Donates Equipment at Abilis Residence
Abilis operates more than a dozen residences in Greenwich, one of which needed a full refresh of its heating and hot water equipment. New England Total Energy donated all of the equipment and labor for the installation, Carlin Combustion Technology donated a gas burner for the house at 12 Orchard.

Greenwich Native Cheryl B. Engelhardt Nominated for Grammy
Cheryl B. Engelhardt’s album, “The Passenger” has been nominated in Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album. This is Engelhardt’s first Grammy nomination. Engelhardt grew up in Greenwich, having graduated from Greenwich Academy in 1998.

Brunswick School ice hockey team honors Teddy Balkind with a bronze plaque on Hartong Rink’s balcony
Prior to the Brunswick School ice hockey team’s season-opening game against Loomis Chaffee School on Thursday evening, the Bruins paid tribute to Teddy Balkind, a student at St. Luke’s School, who died while playing in a junior varsity hockey game against Brunswick at Brunswick’s Hartong Rink on Jan. 6, 2022, in an on-ice accident.

Following a 21-win season in which it advanced all the way to the championship game of the NEPSIHA Large School Tournament, Brunswick School’s hockey team is primed and poised to become to, once again, be one of the premier teams in the NEPSAC this winter.

BOE Revotes on Next Chair
Last Thursday, the Board of Education held their budget meeting at Cos Cob School. The meeting was a second chance for the board to vote on a new chair after the November 16th tie vote between Christina Downey and Joe Kelly. The board had 30 days from the original tie vote to break the tie. Until a new chair wins, the board does not vote on other officers. The December 1st vote once again ended in a tie.
