POLICE & FIRE
Greenwich Firefighters Respond to Box Fire
Late last week, Greenwich Fire units were dispatched for a box alarm reporting smoke in a multi-family house. Engine 3 was on scene within minutes of dispatch to find smoke in the house and confirmed a working basement fire. Units extinguished the basement fire and all occupants were able to self evacuate. No injuries were reported. The GFD Fire Marshals Division is investigating the cause.

Greenwich Public Safety Dispatch Receives letter of Recognition
Earlier this week, Greenwich Police Department Captain James Bonney presented Public Safety Dispatch Temecommunicaor Aidan Tobia with a Divisional Letter of Recognition for his work in public safety dispatching. Last month, Tobia received a 911 call for a male who had collapsed on the floor and stopped breathing. Tobia walked the caller through the administration of CPR while simultaneously dispatching GEMs to the scene who, upon arrival, took over patient care. The patient resumed breathing and was transported to the Greenwich Hospital. According to GEMs, the early intervention of CPR instructions over the phone by Tobia was key in saving the patient’s life.

Ride Safe and Smart This Holiday Season
From now until January 2nd, the Greenwich Police Department and Riverside Service Inc. are pairing up to offer all Greenwich residents a free safe ride home for you and your car in order to protect against drinking and driving. Thief Steals Car with Child Inside (Again)
Greenwich Police are investigating an incident on November 15th where a BMW at the McDonald’s in Riverside was stolen with a child inside. The theft took place after the driver went inside the restaurant and left their child in the car. The thieves let the child out on the Post Road before taking the car and fleeing to New Jersey. The child was unharmed. This is the third time this year a car was stolen with a child inside. All three children were unharmed. This news item is an urgent reminder to please lock your car doors, even if exiting your vehicle for just a moment.

Premiere Pickleball Nets Ready for Play
Even though the time to reserve your game of pickleball is over, the pickleball courts and their new premiere nets are available for use all year long. Parks and recreation has installed six new mobile Pickleball nets at Loughlin Avenue courts, Western Middle School courts, and Eastern Greenwich Civic Center courts. Parks and Rec. reminds residents that outdoor play after November is at your own risk and not recommended during times of precipitation and/or very cold temperatures.

Dogs Now Allowed at Tod’s Point
As of this past Thursday, dogs are now allowed at Tod’s Point! Please keep in mind there are rules for having your canine companions at the beach. Violators will be subject to fines.
All dogs must remain on their leash which should be no more than 10ft and in the hands of an adult. Dog handlers must provide the prompt removal of defecations. TOWN ORDINANCE 7-25.
All dogs must have a valid dog license and rabies vaccination attached to their collar or harness. CGS 22-341, 22-349, 22-339b

Special Committee Evaluating Options for Future of Havemeyer Building
Last Tuesday, the Advisory Committee on the Havemeyer Building appointed by First Selectman Fred Camillo held their first meeting via Zoom. The committee is chaired by Andy Duus, who served four years on the Board of Estimate & Taxation; Bill Drake and Miriam Kreuzer of the BET; Joe Kelly and Christina Downey of the BOE; local architect Amy Courage, who is experienced in historical preservation; and John Lucarelli. The purpose of this new special committee is to look at and recommend potential options for the future uses of the Havemeyer building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Greenwich Municipal Center Historic District.

Section of Arch Street to Close for Hanukkah Menorah Lighting
Last week, the Board of Selectmen voted to approve the request for a road closure for Chabad Lubavitch Greenwich’s Hanukkah Menorah lighting and music event on December 18th. The road will be closed for three-hours to provide for time to set up and break down from the event.

L’Escale Closing for Renovations
Earlier this week, The Delamar Hotel announced that L’Escale will remain at the Delamar. The restaurant will be closing for three months beginning next month for a refresh of its facilities, and is scheduled to reopen this coming spring. Executive Chef Frederic Kieffer, General Manager David Fletcher and members of the staff will stay on.

Pat Sesto Honored for Dedicated Service
Tuesday, November 29th, 2022, was proclaimed Pat Sesto Day by First Selectman Fred Camillo to honor her before her retirement at the end of November from her position as Director of Environmental Affairs.

Greenwich Library Director Announces Retirement
Earlier this week, Greenwich Library Director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn announced her retirement after 20 years of service. Director Ormerod-Glynn will be retiring at the end of 2022. The Greenwich Library Board of Trustees named current Deputy Director Joseph A. Williams as Greenwich Library’s new Director.

SCHOOLS
Native American Studies Model Curriculum Announced
This past Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont and the CT State Dept of Education announced their new partnership with Connecticut’s recognized tribal nations in order to create a new Native American studies model curriculum. This model curriculum and curricular resources is set to include the study of Native American tribes in Connecticut, including Northeastern Woodland tribes.

SPORTS
Dominating on both sides of the ball, Greenwich football team upends Hamden in Class LL Tournament quarterfinals, 47-7, semifinal-round up next for Cardinals
Making big plays on the ground and in the air, Greenwich had a game this past Tuesday night, where its offense seemed unstoppable – a scenario it has enjoyed in most of its games this season.

Greenwich High girls swimming team places sixth at CIAC State Open Championships at Yale University
This season was a rebuilding one for Greenwich High School’s girls swimming/diving team, since it had numerous athletes competing at the varsity level for the first time. Yet, the Cardinals still managed to produce a successful season, highlighted by a wealth of impressive performances.

Greenwich edged by Staples, 39-38, in final minute of Thanksgiving football matchup; Cardinals (8-2) will play Hamden in CIAC Class LL Tournament
Last season’s Thanksgiving Day football game between FCIAC rivals Greenwich and Staples saw the Cardinals register an exciting overtime win in a classic, back-and-forth battle and this year’s matchup between the formidable one-loss teams was the same type of duel, as they matched each other touchdown-for-touchdown until the final minute.

LOCAL POLITICS
​​Greenwich Registrars of Voters Office is a Center for Election Excellence
The Town of Greenwich Registrars of Voters has been selected as a Center for Election Excellence (CEE). This recognizes that Registrars Fred DeCaro III and Mary Hegarty are committed to leadership in election administration. Greenwich is currently the only CEE in CT and New England to receive this designation.

Governor Lamont to Attend White House State Dinner
This past Wednesday, Governor Ned Lamont and First Lady Annie Lamont announced that they were invited by President Joe Biden to attend the state dinner being held at the White House this past Thursday. The dinner highlighted the long-standing ties between the United States and France and included an invitation to President Emmanuel Macron and Mrs. Brigitte Macron of France. Governor Lamont remained in Washington, D.C. today to hold meetings with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
