News Briefs: Thanksgiving Edition

POLICE AND FIRE
Greenwich Fire Department Fund Request Approved
Last week, the BET unanimously approved the emergency appropriation of $98,500 for the removal of potentially dangerous firefighting foam from nine fire engines in the The Greenwich Fire Department fleet. Funds will also be used to help with cleanup costs related to the foam and a fire that occurred in September.

Annual Tree Lighting
The annual Tree Lighting and holiday celebration is being held this year on Friday, DEcember 2nd from 4pm-5pm on the Town Hall lawn.. Entertainment will be provided by Greenwich A Cappella & Allegra Dance Greenwich.

Parks and Recreation Photo Contest
Earlier this week, Greenwich Parks and Recreation announced its 2nd Annual Holiday Photo Contest. Submissions should show how you are getting into the holiday spirit. The contest will run from December 1st to 15th. The winner will be announced December 21st. Only one entry per family. Visit the Greenwich department of Parks and Recreation through the Town website for more information and to participate.

Pat LaRow to be the new Planning and Zoning Director
Planning and Zoning Deputy Director Pat LaRow will be stepping up at the end of this year to become the new Planning & Zoning Director for Greenwich. LaRow is filling the spot upon Katie DeLucas retirement at the end of 2022.

AROUND TOWN
Strong Foundations at the Eastern Civic Center
Construction is coming along for the new Cohen Greenwich Eastern Civic Center. The construction and development of the facilities foundation has begun, including the installation of under-slab plumbing and electric utilities.

Dispose of Your Gourds
Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility is collecting whole, uncarved pumpkins and gourds at the gourd designated drop-off spot near the yard waste area. Carved pumpkins and gourds can be placed in the facility’s food composting containers or in the yard waste area.

Sort Your Leaves
For residents who participate in the Town’s Leaf Collection Program, please make sure that your leaf piles are free of branches and sticks. All the leaves that the Town collects are composted at a local farm, which will not accept any branches and sticks as it impacts their composting process.

Winter Roadwork Moratorium
The winter Roadwork Moratorium has begun. This moratorium has been in effect since Monday, November 21st and will continue until Monday, January 2nd, 2023. The moratorium is in effect in Downtown Greenwich, Old Greenwich, Riverside, Cos Cob, Byram, and Glenville central business districts.

Safe Roads Sundays has Returned to Tod’s Point
Safe Roads Sundays has returned to Tod’s Point, courtesy of Friends of Greenwich Point and Greenwich Parks & Recreation. Having begun on Sunday, November 20th, this program will continue through Sunday, April 9th, 2023. From 9am until 12:30pm the entrance to the main road around Tod’s Point is restricted for non-essential vehicles.

Old Greenwich Garden Club Plants Spring Bulbs
Last Thursday, members of the Garden Club of Old Greenwich planted spring bulbs all over the village of Old Greenwich. They planted 800 Allium, Daffodil and Tulip bulbs in beds along Sound Beach Avenue and in the beds at the train station parking lot by Kings.

PEOPLE IN TOWN
Former Greenwich Country Day Student on USA Team
Former Greenwich Country Day School student and soccer player Gio Reyna is playing for Team USA in the World Cup. Team USA played their first game this past Tuesday at 2pm vs. Wales. The game ended in a draw with a 1-1 score. Team USA will be playing against England – who won their Tuesday match against Iran 6-2 – today at 2pm. USA will also be playing against Iran next Tuesday, November 29th, at 2pm.

Greenwich Musician Announces Contemporary Folk Album
Greenwich musician Nick Carter recently announced his new album, Fountain Pen. Fountain Pen is his first exploration of the contemporary folk world. Fountain Pen is available for listening through Bandcamp or Spotify.

Greenwich Teen to Perform in Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker
15 year old Greenwich resident Hugo Levine will perform in this year’s production of Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker with the Boston Ballet. Levine will be in the role of Fritz. He has been a student at Boston Ballet School for less than a year, having joined the school’s Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Fall of this year. Prior to his enrollment in the Boston Ballet School, he was a student both at Greenwich Ballet Academy and Greenwich High School. Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker opens November 25th at the Citizens Bank Opera House with performances through December 31st.

Fifth Annual Inspiring Women Awards Ceremony
Last Thursday, the YWCA of Greenwich held its fifth annual Women Who Inspire Awards ceremony. Receiving awards this year were Stephanie Dunn Ashley; Kathleen Bordelon; Grace Lockhart Djuranovic; Danielle Eason; Laura Erickson; Molly H. King; Christine Lai; Nicole Mitchell; Karen Santucci, MD FAAP; and Asha K. Shah, MD MS.

Tie Vote for Board of Education Chair
Last week both Christina Downey and Joe Kelly were nominated as candidates for Chair of the Board of Education. For a nominee to become chair of the board requires 5 out of 8 votes. If the Board cannot elect a chair with 5 out 8 votes, the decision then moves to the Board of Selectmen. Last week’s vote ended in a 4-4 tie. The BOE has 30 days to revote.

Greenwich Academy captures NEPSAC Class A Field Hockey Tournament title with 4-3 victory over Taft School in finals
Nearly every team Greenwich Academy played this season was a postseason caliber squad, so when it faced Taft School in last Sunday’s NEPSAC Class A Field Hockey Tournament final it was certainly a battle-tested team.
