Years ago, this reporter compiled an anthology of quotations of care and concern for the earth stretching across 2000 years of environmental awareness. Henceforth we will share a quotation weekly, with a bit of background from time to time.
This week: “It’s not easy bein’ green.”
The line is from a song sung by Kermit the Frog, created by Jim Henson, late of Greenwich. Joe Raposo, a gifted composer, who wrote many of the songs and music used on Sesame Street, wrote Green which became Kermit’s best known song. The line from that song, “It’s not easy bein’ green”, is well known to Muppets fans all over the world.
A few months ago British Prime Minister Boris Johnson quoted it before the UN General Assembly in New York urging action to address climate problems. “I want you to know he {Kermit] was wrong,” said Johnson. “It’s not only easy, it’s lucrative and it’s right to be green.”
