Greenwich Streetscapes

By Albert Huang

Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works has launched a new interactive website titled greenwichstreetscape.com in order to receive valuable public feedback about the Greenwich Avenue Streetscape project.

The streetscape project was created to revitalize and upgrade several roads that intersect with Greenwich Avenue in terms of safety, accessibility, and aesthetics. This includes updating and implementing lighting, sidewalks, signage, landscaping, crosswalks, site furnishings and more.

The Greenwich Department of Public Works has completed construction on one intersection and plans to redesign five more. The department wants opinions and ideas from the community to improve the current concepts of both upcoming and completed streetscape projects.

The five proposed intersections include:

  • Amogerone Crossway
  • Lewis Street
  • Havemeyer Place and Arch Street
  • Grigg Street and Fawcett Place
  • West Putnam Avenue

The website features interactive information which includes a before-and-after slider that helps visualize the updates to the streetscape. The website also showcases a selection of options for new vehicular and pedestrian signage. The department is asking the community to provide feedback on traffic analysis and where traffic operations can be improved.

The East and West Elm Street intersection construction was completed this past June. The finished product features:

    • Curb extensions (a.k.a. bump-outs) to decrease crossing distance
    • Improved accessibility by creating two designated accessible parking spaces with a clear pathway to the sidewalk from the parking space, along with a level crosswalk
    • Raised intersection (including crosswalks) to improve pedestrian visibility and to slow speed of vehicles traveling through intersection
    • Decorative crosswalks
    • Planting beds
    • Relocated lighting
    • Relocated drainage
    • Lining of the drainage and sanitary sewer lines to further extend their lifespan
    • Reduction in impervious areas
    • Relocated amenities
    • Replaced sidewalks
    • New bike racks and benches

In a statement the Department of Public Works said it has conducted over 20 studies in the past 20 years that focus on key improvements to Greenwich Avenue and remains committed to providing services such as highway and roadway maintenance, sewer upkeep, stormwater management, waste disposal, recycling, building inspection, and improvement of public infrastructure.
