Greenwich Public Schools 4th in State; 8 Schools of Distinction

Fourth highest performance index in Connecticut
Eight schools designated as Schools of Distinction

“We are pleased with the Greenwich Public Schools results as reflected in the recent release of the Connecticut State Department of Education’s (CSDE) 2016-2017 Next Generation Accountability System. GPS maintained a high level of performance on a balanced scorecard of measures published by the CSDE, moving from the 6th highest performance index in the State to the 4th highest index,” noted Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jill Gildea. As of the 2016-17 school year, Greenwich earned a total of 86.4% of the possible points on CSDE’s Next Generation Accountability System.

Eight Greenwich Public Elementary schools have been designated as Schools of Distinction based on 2016-2017 performance data. Six GPS elementary schools were recognized as Schools of Distinction for being in the top 10% in the state for high levels of student academic growth (all students and/or high needs): Cos Cob, Glenville, International School at Dundee, North Mianus, North Street, and Old Greenwich. In addition, six elementary schools were in the top 10% of the state in terms of the overall Accountability Index: International School at Dundee, North Mianus, North Street School, Old Greenwich, Parkway and Riverside.

The Next Generation Accountability System includes district performance on a composite of twelve indicators.  These twelve indicators cover a variety of dimensions ranging from performance on state assessments (SBA and SAT) to physical fitness standards to attendance. The District index includes a possible 850 points earned on All Students K-12 indicators.  An additional 500 points are earned by performance of High Needs Students (Free/Reduced Price Lunch, English Language Learners or Special Education). There are a total of 1350 possible points available within the scoring system.

Greenwich Public Schools outperforms the state average in each category of the Next Generation Accountability Report.  Areas of continued focus include strategies to ensure high needs students are attending school, are increasing their learning trajectory through targeted instruction interventions, and are continuing efforts to reduce attainment gaps for students in ELA, Math, and Science. Greenwich Public Schools aligns its school improvement efforts to address needs of students and in creating conditions for student success in both academic and social emotional learning areas.

The State’s Next Generation Accountability System is one set of measures that serves to complement how the District measures its own performance within its Strategic Plan.
