The Red Cross has issued an urgent call for blood donations following severe winter weather. The YMCA of Greenwich and the American Red Cross have teamed up to answer the call for blood donations and have set ambitious goals.

There is a constant need for blood, but with recent severe winter weather dozens of blood drives across the country have been canceled, causing an urgent need for both blood and platelets. Over 5,500 of pints of blood have gone uncollected and blood is being distributed to hospitals as quickly as it collected. With the winter shortage, more blood is urgently needed so that patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments.

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Be a hero in the greater community, and help save a life by donating blood. By giving blood you will help those who are affected by cancer, accidents and those patients affected by sickle cell. The blood drive will be held on Monday, Jan. 29 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., at YMCA of Greenwich, 50 East Putnam Ave.
