“You remember it or it remembers you” by Thomas Doyle

The Flinn Gallery will launch its 2017-18 season with an opening reception for the exhibit, “Memory of Place: Frank Poor & Thomas Doyle,” on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The interdependence of memory and place has been a consistent subject matter of both Doyle and Poor’s work as artists. In singular ways both reference notions of landscape, geography, and architecture. Doyle and Poor look at remnants of things past, whether quiet moments or transformational experiences. For Doyle, the intimately scaled works in miniature (often displayed under glass) distort reality through a warped and dreamlike lens. Suburban New England homes and families’ interaction around them are frozen in time. Ready to topple into sinkholes or pushed to the brink, these environments and those who dwell in them are uncanny. The narrative remains ambiguous and the viewer must tease out their own story.

On Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m., the artists will discuss their artwork and creative process during an artists’ talk at the gallery.

The events are free and open to the public. Flinn Gallery, located in the Greenwich Library, is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday until 8 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 203-622-7947, or visit flinngallery.com
