The Greenwich Shellfish Commission will kick off the local recreational shellfishing season at the Fred Elser First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center in Greenwich Point Park on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Greenwich Shellfish Commissioner Roger Bowgen will discuss a new weir project in nearby waters and the recent partnership between the Town of Greenwich and the University of Connecticut to provide science-based information on the ecology and natural resources of Greenwich and Long Island Sound. Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy family-oriented activities throughout the afternoon and learn how and when to safely and legally harvest clams, oysters and mussels from local waters. The activities include exploration of the marine touch-tank, close-up looks at local mollusks, and demonstrations of shellfishing tools by members of the Greenwich Shellfish Commission. Due to the tides, the program will be held indoors.
