The Brunswick rowing team returned to the Charles River Basin in Boston, racing several schools on the famed rowing waterway on Sunday.

Both of Brunswick’s Varsity-8 and Second Varsity-8 finished second, while the Bruins’ Third Varsity-8 and Freshmen-8 won their races, as the Fourth Varsity-8 finished fourth.

Boston College H.S., in conjunction with Brookline H.S., hosted Brunswick along with Fairfield Prep, Fordham Prep and St. John’s H.S. (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for the Mother’s Day event.

The teams lined up six across racing 1,500-meters upstream from the MIT Sailing Pavilion along the Cambridge shore up towards Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse. Huge crowds of parents and supporters gathered at the finish line despite the wind and rain.

Facing strong headwinds and some chop, regatta hosts Boston College H.S. won both the Varsity-8 and Second Varsity-8 races, as the Bruins finished second in each race. St. John’s, with wins against Exeter and Tabor earlier this year, took third.

Brunswick’s Third Varsity-8 remained undefeated with an open-water victory over the five other schools, while the Freshmen-8 pulled away from the field to win their race by 15 seconds.

Brunswick’s Fourth Varsity-8 raced tough, but fell back to fourth place in their race.

Up next for the Bruins is the Kent Invitational, at Lake Waramaug, on Saturday. The race, formerly the Connecticut Championships, is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
