Last year, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team finished the season 18-4, but lost five players to graduation. This season, head coach Chrys Hernandez says she is looking for last year’s bench players to step up in a big way.
“I tried to get as many players in as possible so they are not coming off cold. We knew we were going to graduate a large class last year, and the players we have returning got some good minutes last season. It’s not like they are going to have inexperience, which is a good thing,” said Hernandez.
“We are a pretty young team, but I believe in everyone on this team. We are going to do well,” said Emily Anderson.
Three key returning players are tri-captains Abbie Wolf, Caroline Beneville, and Emily Anderson. Wolf is a four year starter and will be playing at Northwestern next season. Coach Hernandez says she is proud of how her center has developed.
“It’s my fourth year here and I have a different perspective on things- not being so nervous and I know what it’s like going to an FCIAC and state tournament,” said Wolf.
“She has definitely grown and blossomed into the player we knew she could be,” said Hernandez.
But, the team will not be relying on Wolf alone. With goals that include winning both FCIAC and state titles, Hernandez says the team’s conditioned and well-rounded game will be key.
“When it’s all put together, it’s a beautiful thing and we all agree on that,” said Hernandez.
“We lost by one point last year in the championship. We have to keep that in mind when we play every game,” said Wolf.
“We really just want to finish the job this year and get it done,” said Beneville.
The team will open its season on December 21 at home at 7:00 p.m. against Darien.
