The historic Old Barn at Greenwich Point was built back in 1887, and on Sunday, the newly reconstructed and restored barn was unveiled.
This is the centerpiece of the Greenwich Point Conservancy’s Gateway project that began 10 years ago, and the new facilities at the Old Bard will now be called the Sue H. Baker Pavilion.
Officials say Baker was a co-founder of the Greenwich Point Conservancy, and has been active in the community and at the Point for decades as a teacher, conservationist, environmentalist and as a preservationist.
The Pavilion is FEMA compliant and features a new exterior and roof, a rebuilt concession stand and restrooms, and a 4,000 square foot dining deck with 27 tables and seating for 125 people. The GPC funded this project through private efforts and donations from organizations like Green Fingers Garden Club. The GPC also received a $500,000 Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Assistance Grant from the government.
This completes the GPC’s work at the Greenwich Point entrance. Next, officials say, they will begin to rebuild other historic buildings on the Point.
