Some of Greenwich’s youngest civilians got hands on fire training today at the Round Hill Volunteer Fire Company’s Open House.
The Round Hill Volunteer Fire Company has been in operation since October of 1948.
“It means you have all the same training as a career personnel, but you do it because you have the desire to do it, you’re not getting a paycheck for it,” said Chief Rick Strain.
Chief Rick Strain says there are hundreds of volunteers on the books but only about 12 active fire fighters in the company at this time.
“We’re limited on man power so we design things so things could be operated with minimal manpower,” said Chief Strain.
Round Hill gets a budget from the Town, but most of its funds are raised through events like this open house.
“We do a fund drive letter twice a year. Basically everything we have here is paid for through the community donations,” said Strain.
The Chief says they are always look for more volunteers, and not just ones that fight fires.
“There are other jobs that need doing- fundraising, public relations, accountant work,” said Strain.
