Tuesday marks the first day back for Greenwich public schools, and the Greenwich Japanese School is celebrating 40 years of students returning.

“We believe it’s our responsibility to educate our students,” said Principal Fukuko Fujinaga.

The school began as the Japanese School of New York in Queens in 1975. The curriculum incorporates both Japanese and American philosophies so students learn two cultures and languages everyday.

The Greenwich Japanese School is currently located in the Carmel Academy campus, and officials say that makes it easy for the two institutions to collaborate.

“We have actively been participating in basketball and soccer matches,” said Fujinaga.
