Greenwich Rugby Takes the Silver at Hell Gate 7’s Tourney

The Greenwich Rugby team finished in second place at the Hell Gate 7’s Tournament at Randall’s Island, N.Y.

Greenwich swept through pool play with wins over Ridge Rugby, N.J. 35-7, Play Rugby USA 29-26, and Gents of 73rd, N.Y. 59-0.

They then beat Winged Foot, N.Y. 59-0 in the semis.

In the finals, Greenwich was edged by the Union Mud Turtles of N.J. 20-19 on a penalty kick with no time remaining.  The Mud Turtles had taken a 17-0 lead before Greenwich stormed back in the 2nd half with 19 unanswered points.

On the day, Jack Freiheit scored 11 tries, Soh Nakayama had five tries and 14 conversions, Bryce Stanback scored four tries and four conversions and Joe DeMuyt added three tries and four conversions.

Mitch Nethercott added another three tries, while Kevin Wright pitched in with two tries, and Lewis Grassie, Will Beney, and Greg Terry all added one try each.

Next up for Greenwich is the Surfside American High School Rugby 7’s Championship Tournament in southern New Jersey next weekend.
