For many, summertime weather means time to break out the flip flops, and on National Flip-Flop Day, one restaurant is celebrating with smoothies and sunshine.
When asked how she felt about Tropical Smoothie Cafe helping out kids, Daniela, one of the younger customers of the day said she felt “good”
During National Flip-Flop Day, Tropical Smoothie Cafés around the country raised funds for Camp Sunshine, a retreat that provides rest and support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families in times of need.
“Even if someone doesn’t have their flip flops on, we say donate a dollar and you can still have the smoothie. It’s about raising awareness. Maine isn’t that far away and kids from all over the country go to the camp. It is just a nice thing to do,” said Mark Lukachko, owner of Tropical Smoothie Café of Greenwich and Stamford.
Friday afternoon, the Greenwich Avenue location served up their Jetty Punch smoothie for anyone wearing flip flops.
“I’m going to come back here and donate some more to help kids,” said Maria Orellana of Greenwich
Customers says being able to support Camp Sunshine while enjoying a cool drink is a sweet deal.
“It’s an awesome idea. It is really great. I have kids. They are healthy kids but there are kids that are not so fortunate so why not have a camp for them to go and enjoy themselves and just have fun like a regular kid,” said Ana Diaz of Greenwich.
Tropical Smoothie Cafés around the country hope to raise over $1 million during National Flip-Flop Day this year.
