World Affairs Forum Great Decisions – "Whither France & the EU in a Time of Resurgent Nationalism"

April 24, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Europe’s future lies in the hands of French voters this May. How did the history of France and Europe bring us to this moment? After Brexit, a wave of terrorist attacks, and the rise of nationalist populism, how well equipped are the French to tackle the challenges they face at home and on the continent?
Herrick Chapman teaches history and French studies at New York University. He is the author of France’s Long Reconstruction:  In Search of the Modern Republic (forthcoming, October 2017). His other books include State Capitalism and Working-Class Radicalism in the French Aircraft Industry; and co-authored with Peter Stearns, European Society in Upheaval: Social History since 1750 (third edition). He has also co-edited several books, including Race in France: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Politics of Difference. Since 1999 he has served as the editor of the journal French Politics, Culture & Society.
Chapman holds an A.B in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University, an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and international Affairs, Princeton University, an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Department of History.
