The Needs of Plants & How to Satisfy Them Ecologically

April 7, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$25
needsofplants

In the sixth workshop of our Ecological Landscapes series, we will list the needs of plants: sunlight, nutrients, moisture and soil characteristics.

out on the Audubon property, we will observe the functioning of the nutrient cycle by which soil organisms convert dead plant material into humus (compost), the perfect plant food that produces the luxurious growth of plants in the natural world. We will collect samples to take to the classroom to study the ecology of the soil with both the unaided eye and under the microscope, we will learn by observation the structure of a healthy soil and how these soil organisms create it.

In the classroom, we will learn the characteristics of a healthy soil structure and why it is critical for successfully growing plants ecologically. We will learn why compost (humus) is essential for creating and maintaining soil fertility and structure. We will learn how to introduce the natural processes of nutrient recycling into our gardens and landscapes to create and maintain an ecologically healthy soil.
