Listening to the Stars
April 30, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Stars hum. Quite literally! While we cannot hear their sounds because of the emptiness of space, we can detect the ‘sounds’ through the study of their oscillations and quakes. These ‘sounds’ disclose what happens inside a star in a manner similar to the way earthquake waves can inform us about the Earth’s interior.
The study of stars (asteroseismology) has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. While the Canadian satellite MOST and European mission CoROT allowed us to study stellar pulsations, the recent NASA Kepler Mission has allowed us to perform asteroseismic studies more comprehensively.
Dr. Sarbani Basu will give everyone a flavor of what asteroseismology has revealed over the past couple of decades and how we are using the results.
