Winifred B (Foley) Petersen, 88, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away surrounded by her family on April 2, 2021. She attended the Academy of the Holy Name high school in Baltic, CT and graduated in 1950. In her youth, she worked for Time magazine in New York City. She was the first woman to swim Long Island Sound in 1945.
She was born Dec. 12, 1932 to Ann and Charles Foley. She had been married to the late George A. Petersen for almost 60 years. Winifred is survived by her children, Michael Petersen (Miriam), Elizabeth A. Tyrrell (James), Barbara Engborg (Richard), and Maryann Boyer (Philip); her grandchildren Amanda Engborg, Jessica Tyrrell, Laura Boyer Brown, Timothy Engborg, Emily Boyer, Michelle Petersen, William Lankard and Christopher Petersen.
Funeral services are to be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery on April 7, 2021 at 12 p.m.
