March 31, 2021 Proclaimed as Dr Saul Hertz Nuclear Medicine/ Radiopharmaceutical Day

WHEREAS, The Dr Saul Hertz ( 1905-1950) Archives, established in Greenwich, Connecticut, document Dr Hertz as conceiving and bringing from bench to bedside the medical uses of Radioiodine (RAI); and

 

WHEREAS, March 31st commemorates Dr. Saul Hertz's administration of first therapeutic use of radioiodine(RAI) to diagnose and treat disease in 1941; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr Hertz established and expanded the use of radioactive pharmaceuticals to be used diagnostically and therapeutically worldwide, to extend the lives of countless generations of patients; and

 

WHEREAS, The medical uses of radioiodine (RAI) is the Gold Standard of targeted precision oncology; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Saul Hertz’s paradigm-changing breakthrough represents a seminal medical discovery of the 20th Century, with The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) awarding an annual Saul Hertz Lifetime Achievement Award as well as The American Chemical Society (ACS) designation of a “ Dr. Saul Hertz – Radioiodine “ National Historic Landmark; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FRED CAMILLO, FIRST SELECTMAN OF THE TOWN OF GREENWICH, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2021 as

DR. SAUL HERTZ NUCLEAR MEDICINE/RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL DAY in the Town of Greenwich and urge all our citizens to recognize the impact of Dr. Hertz’s discovery in the field of nuclear medicine.
