With the holiday season just beginning, many experts had predicted a surge in COVID-19 cases as winter approached.
In Greenwich, that surge appears to be taking place right now.
On Friday in his weekly email newsletter, First Selectman Fred Camillo gave an update on COVID-19 in town.
Since Friday, Nov. 27, Greenwich has seen an increase of 224 cases. Of that increase, the age group 41 to 55 has the most with 55 cases, followed by age groups 11 to 20 and 21 to 30 at 38 and 39 cases, respectively. All other age groups are under 22 cases.
The death toll has risen from last Wednesday by three, to 58, since March.
This week, from Wednesday, Dec. 2 to Friday, Dec. 4, there has been an increase of 104 cases, bringing the total number of residents who have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began to 1,760.
Camillo noted that according to Greenwich’s Health Director, Caroline Baisley, the town has had 38 reporting case delays from the state due to the overwhelming number of cases.
Hospitalizations at Greenwich Hospital have also increased since Nov. 27, from 24 to 38, as of Friday. Three patients remain on ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit.
“While this is surge is not unexpected with the return of students from college and holiday travel and gatherings, it is imperative that we collectively and proactively follow CDC guidelines to mitigate these rising numbers,” Camillo said in his email.
Residents are reminded to follow the 4 W’s: watch your distance; wash your hands; wipe down surfaces and wear a face mask.
