
The Brunswick School crew team had top 10 finishes in their divisions during the Head of the Riverfront Regatta, held in Hartford on Sunday.
The Varsity-8 boat took third, while the Second Varsity-8 had the top time in its group. The Freshman-8 nabbed the eighth spot, as the lone Varsity-4 boat took third place.
The Varsity-8 boat, including rowers Tate Huffman, Alex Wada, Alexander Kutner, Thomas Kern, Gamble Freydberg, Will Powers, Will Bass, stroke Matthew Womble, and coxswain Alex Esmond finished the 2.25 miles in 16:01.69, only 21.67 seconds off the lead pace set by Saugatuck.
The Bruins, winners of the race last year, took third out of 25 boats.
The Second Varsity-8 boat, winners of the event in 2014, maintained the top spot this year with a time of 15:03.04, just over eight seconds faster than the second place crew.
The Bruins topped 29 other boats over the 2.25 mile distance. Rowers on the boat included Jack Altman, Duke Guadalupe, Angus Fraser, Jack Mozingo, Andrew Kelly, Matthew Jacobson, Ridgely Knapp, Andreas Kern in the stroke seat and cox Conor Boyle.
Finishing seventh to the second Brunswick boat was the third boat for the Bruins, 1:11.8 off their schoolmates’ time. The rowers were comprised of Nick Breckenridge, Oliver Nusbaum, Christian Ruf, Ben Shore, Alex Jacobson, Alex Tucker, Paxti Irazu, David Sorbaro at stroke and coxswain Emmett Bell.
The Freshman-8, including Alex Trauber, Tommy Kimberlin, Jack Hall, Daniel Augustine, Ryan McMurchy, Jack Hoeffel, Henry Hill, Scott Gibbons at stroke and cox Cooper Murray, crossed the line in 18:07.34, good for eighth place out of 24 boats.
Brunswick’s lone entry in the Varsity-4, Kutner at the bow, Kern and Powers at two and three, respectfully, Bass at the stroke position, and Esmond sitting at cox, took third place out of 24 entries.
The Bruins will return to the water on Saturday, racing the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton. The Varsity-8, winners of the 2014 event, look forward to a repeat performance.
