John J. Gannon, formerly of Cos Cob and Chatham, Mass., passed away on Sept. 8. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, John was born in Stamford on Jan. 9, 1934, the son of John and Mary (Hyland) Gannon. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane (Saraniero) Gannon, along with a loving and devoted family.

John was a master craftsman and engineer, with expert skills in electrical wiring, control systems, finish carpentry, and cabinet making. A 1951 Greenwich High School graduate, John served proudly in the U.S. Navy. He began his career with DeMarkey’s Millwork in Greenwich, later becoming an electrician for Lee DeForest in Riverside and then an engineer and control systems designer for Clairol, Inc. in Stamford. He also ran his own highly successful electrical contracting business for many years, first in Greenwich and then Chatham, Mass.

John most enjoyed spending time with family and working on the many extensive home remodeling and expansion projects he took on over the years. Along with his incredible workmanship and unwavering readiness to lend a hand, John will be remembered for his strong faith, integrity, and fun-loving sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by seven children: Cathleen Gannon; Sharon Gannon; John (Florence) Gannon, Jr.; Deborah (Martin) Armenta; Thomas (Mary) Gannon; Rev. Brian Gannon; and Stephen Gannon. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his sister Patricia (James) McGoldrick, and sister-in-law, Jeanne Gannon. John was predeceased by his parents and brother, William.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist RC Church. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greenwich.

The family is deeply grateful to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center for the exceptional, loving, and respectful care they provided to John. We also thank all of the caregivers who looked after him with great kindness and affection.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist RC Church, 279 Atlantic Street, Stamford, CT 06901. To leave online condolences, please visit Cognetta.com.
