Greenwich Public Schools start back up next week, and today, district teachers gathered at Greenwich High School for a big “Welcome Back” from Superintendent Dr. William McKersie.
“I have two main points for us this year. The first is excellence and compassion go hand in hand. Second, personalized learning is our path to academic personal and interpersonal growth,” said McKersie.
This year, personalized learning will be taken to the next level.
“In Greenwich Public Schools, it is the year of the Digital learning Environment, or DLE,” said Carol Sutton.
More than 8,000 Greenwich students will be given a personal devices with seemingly unlimited resources.
“Need to look up a vocabulary word? There’s an app for that. Need to practice using a compass rose for cardinal directions? There’s an app for that. Need to work on a group project without leaving home? There’s an app for that,” said Sutton.
But, Carol Sutton, the President of the Greenwich Education Association, stresses that teachers are still irreplaceable during this new digital age.
“There is no app for a shoulder to cry on or stand on. To put it simply, there is no app for you, the teachers,” said Sutton.
“We need to make sure we use our time efficiently, that we focus everything we do on benefiting the students,” said Barbara O’Neill, Chairman of the Board of Education.
The official first day of school for all students is Wednesday, September 2.
