Berniece (Hicks) Heck passed away peacefully in Bluffton, S.C. at the age of 97, following a long and full life. Berniece was born in Toronto, Ontario to John and Sarah Hicks. The family moved to Kitchener where Berniece and her five siblings spent the majority of their formative years.
Berniece was a happy and fun-loving person who was always up for an adventure. As a young woman, she joined the Canadian Armed Forces. This adventure led her to Newfoundland, Canada. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Arthur Heck, an American serving in the U.S. Air Force. Art and Berniece were married in 1944. Berniece and Art spent most of their married life in New York State where they raised their two children Warren and Debbie. Later, they moved to Greenwich, CT, where Berniece had a successful career in real estate property management.
Berniece was predeceased in 1988 by Art, with whom she shared 44 incredible years. She retired to Sun City, Hilton Head and was an active member of the Christian Science Church there. Having lived a vigorous and active life, she had been declining in the last couple of years. Berniece took great pride in being the very first resident in The Palmettos of Bluffton (an assisted living facility). We are extremely grateful for the loving care she received there and most recently at NHC.
Berniece is survived by her two children, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Memorial service will take place on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m., at Saul’s Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The First Church of Christ, Scientist, 4 Park Lane, Hilton Head, SC 29928.
