

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Altman was born in West Point, Ga. on March 1, 1932, and she returned to heaven on Sept. 22, 2018, passing serenely, in her sleep. She will be remembered for her generous smile, her pleasant southern drawl and her outward love for others.
Betty and Don Altman were married for 50 years and traveled the world together for Don’s business which included the founding of the first American company in China in 1976. Betty was a part of the Brunswick School community for 53 years as she filled the roles of mother to three Brunswick lifers; grandmother to three more Brunswick lifers and two granddaughter lifers at Greenwich Academy; BPA President and Bookstore Founder and Manager. “Brunswick is very special and I love everything about it,” said Betty upon her retirement. Her devotion to Brunswick was recognized in 1998 by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education with the Independent Schools Distinguished Service Award The Class of ’85 established the Betty Altman Endowment Fund which provides support for the bookstore needs of financial aid students. “Betty is Brunswick pure and simple,” said Tom Philip, Headmaster. “She has dedicated her life to our school and our boys. Her name is an integral part of our lore, and her love of our school is unmatched.”
Betty lived at Edgehill for the last 10 years and the family is grateful to all her wonderful friends and caregivers there. She has been reunited in heaven with her loving husband Donald and her beloved sons, Tom and John. She is survived by her brother Harry Loosier of Atlanta; her son Bob Altman and daughter-in-law, Wendy Dewart Altman of Danbury; her daughter Beth Rosencrans and son-in-law Ron Rosencrans of Greenwich; and her seven grandchildren: Brooke, Justin, Kristin and Alexa Altman; and Jay, Eva and William Rosencrans.
A private service and burial will be held at Putnam Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Brunswick School, The Altman Fund, 100 Maher Avenue, Greenwich, CT 06830.
