Letter: From Sherman to Camillo: Common Sense, Civil Compromise, and the Making of Diamonds

If the United States had an “Opening Act,” it would be the Connecticut Compromise — led by Connecticut’s own Roger Sherman.

It was the greatest deal in American history: two fiercely divided political sides, guided by common sense and civil compromise, forged a balance that gave birth to our Union. From that compromise, the Constitution — and the nation itself — could finally take shape, a diamond of unity crafted under pressure for generations to come.

Roger Sherman was one of the most brilliant yet understated Founders of our Republic. Unique among the Founders, he signed all four of America’s great founding documents — the Articles of Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.

With a steady hand and a commitment to common sense, Roger Sherman played a key role in shaping the Connecticut Compromise — the agreement that secured representation for both small and large states and allowed the United States to exist. His civil compromise turned division into enduring strength, a diamond shining bright for the nation’s future.

If America has a heartbeat, the first beat was the Connecticut Compromise. By that measure, Connecticut is the heart of the Union. If Connecticut has a heart, it is Hartford. If Hartford has a heart, it is Greenwich. And if Greenwich has a heart, it is Fred Camillo.

From his years as a local business owner to his service in the Connecticut House of Representatives, and now as First Selectman, Fred Camillo has led the way Roger Sherman did — with common sense and civil compromise, building bridges, forging consensus, and putting community above partisanship. His leadership transforms challenges into solutions, crafting diamonds that will shine for Greenwich’s generations to come.

We all love Greenwich. We all believe in its future. And under Fred Camillo’s leadership, Greenwich will continue to create diamonds — solutions forged under pressure through common sense and civil compromise, shining bright for generations to come.
