Town Ferry Service Suspended, Impacts of Hurricane Erin are Being Monitored

The Town of Greenwich continues to monitor the impact of Hurricane Erin as it tracks Northeast offshore.

The storm remains out at sea, and it is not believed that it is likely to hit land in this region. But effects could still be felt in Greenwich’s waters and along the shore so First Selectman Fred Camillo is urging residents to be aware and look for updates on the storm’s potential impact.

As a precaution, the Department of Parks and Recreation has cancelled ferry service to Island Beach and Great Captain Island for both Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, Aug. 21.

No overnight campers will be allowed on the islands during this period and a decision will be announced on Thursday about the status of ferry service and camping for Friday and the upcoming weekend.

No other restrictions on access to Town beaches are being put in place at this time. The Town’s Emergency Management Department will continue to monitor potentially dangerous surf conditions and, if needed, restrictions for public safety will be put in place.

Forecasts call for high wind gusts along the coast on Thursday with speeds potentially up to 40 miles per hour. The National Weather Service has put a gale warning in effect starting Thursday and through Friday. And there is the possibility of moderate coastal flooding during the high tide on Thursday, with a potential of one to two feed of inundation in vulnerable coastal areas.

Please take precautions if you are in one of those vulnerable coastal areas of Town.

Further updates will be announced if needed.
