One-Mile Swim to Support YMCA Water Safety Programs

On Saturday, July 19, swimmers from across the region will gather at Tod’s Point for the 36th Annual One Mile Swim, a signature summer event co-hosted by the Greenwich Swim Committee and the YMCA of Greenwich. While the course may span just one mile, the impact of each stroke will stretch far beyond the shoreline—all proceeds from the event will support water safety programs and swim lesson scholarships at the YMCA of Greenwich.

This year’s race helps raise critical funds for the YMCA of Greenwich’s Swim School Scholarship Campaign, ensuring that children in our community can access swim lessons, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. In a waterfront town like Greenwich, knowing how to swim isn’t just a recreational skill—it’s a vital layer of safety. Drowning can happen in an instant, and every child deserves the chance to learn how to stay safe in and around water.

To deepen its impact, the YMCA of Greenwich has expanded its Safety Around Water program this year, identifying children in Greenwich Public Schools who lack basic water safety skills and providing them with free six-week swim lessons. These efforts, supported in part by events like the One Mile Swim, are helping to close the gap and ensure cost is never a barrier to safety.

The race begins at 7:30 a.m., with check-in opening at 6:30 a.m. Participants will swim a one-mile course in the Long Island Sound, where water temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees. Swimmers will be grouped by age and provided with colored caps; wetsuits are permitted but swimmers using them will not be eligible for awards. After crossing the finish line, swimmers will be greeted with light refreshments and commemorative T-shirts—a tradition that celebrates both athletic achievement and community spirit.

Registration is $65 for adults. Awards will be given to the top three overall swimmers and the top three finishers in each age group, ranging from 19–24 through 80+, including an Achilles division.

Last year’s event raised $2,500 after expenses for the YMCA’s scholarship fund. This year, the goal is to go even further—not only to support swim instruction but to help build a safer, more inclusive community through water safety education.
