Nick Simmons, the Democratic candidate for Connecticut’s Senate District 36, secured a cross-endorsement from the Connecticut Independent Party. This development positions Simmons on both the Democratic and Independent ballot lines for the November elections.
Republican incumbent Ryan Fazio, who also sought the Independent Party’s endorsement, responded to the decision by highlighting his ability to collect 645 signatures f rom voters in Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan for Independent Party ballot access, far exceeding his opponent’s 473 signatures. Despite this, Fazio pointed to the influence of internal party dynamics, stating that the Independent Party committee members, all of whom live outside the district, opted to endorse Simmons due in part to what he termed a personal relationship between his opponent and the party’s treasurer.
“I am deeply honored to be the first Democrat in the history of Senate District 36 to receive a cross-endorsement f rom the Connecticut Independent Party,” Simmons said. He emphasized his commitment to bipartisan leadership, fiscal responsibility, and creating a prosperous future for the district. John Fahan, Treasurer of the Independent Party, cited Simmons’ dedication to lowering the cost of living and fostering a business-friendly environment as key reasons for the endorsement.
Fazio said he remains focused on serving his constituents, stating, “My priority will always be serving our district—not insider politics elsewhere.” Fazio emphasized his bipartisan record in the Senate. “I am proud of my bipartisan record in the Senate, having passed six new laws last term to enhance birth control access, local control of zoning, and utilities oversight,” Fazio said.
Rachel Khanna Also Secures Endorsement
In the 149th District race, Rachel Khanna, the Democratic incumbent for state representative, also secured the Connecticut Independent Party’s endorsement. This marks the second consecutive election in which Khanna has received the Independent Party’s backing. Khanna will appear on both the Democratic and Independent ballot lines in November.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Connecticut Independent Party,” Khanna said in a statement. “We share a common commitment to fiscal responsibility and working to create an economically vibrant Connecticut, where all have the opportunity to thrive.” K hanna noted that the endorsement ref lects her accomplishments over the past two years, including her efforts to represent all residents of the 149th District, regardless of party affiliation.
