‘Fill-A-Public Works Truck’ Benefits Neighbor to Neighbor

By Shreya Prabhu

Governor Ned Lamont signed an official proclamation declaring the week of May 21-27, 2023, is called National Public Works Week. In this proclamation, Lamont urges Connecticut residents “to pay tribute to our public works professionals, engineers, managers, and employees – to recognize the substantial contributions they make to protecting our national health, safety, and quality of life.”

In honor of Public Works Week, the Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works hosted a Fill-A-Public Works Truck with the intention to collect food and other household provisions to support Neighbor to Neighbor, a non-profit that provides food to Greenwich residents in need. The Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works has six divisions (Engineering, Building Construction & Maintenance, Building Inspection, Highway, Sewer, and Waste Disposal) which are responsible for ensuring critical infrastructure that keeps the Town of Greenwich safe and running is always maintained and operating properly.

For the entire month of May, the Department of Public Works collected items for Neighbor to Neighbor through two “trucks’ ‘ in different locations in Town Hall–- one in the lobby, and another on the second floor, next to the entrance of the Building Inspection Division’s office.

Neighbor to Neighbor notes that the food drive was a success, “five crates of food were delivered back to Neighbor to Neighbor.” Neighbor to Neighbor is currently serving over 400 households weekly, and this food drive helped increase food supply for the summer months. There was also an online food drive that raised 93 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“We are so grateful to be chosen as the recipient of the Fill-A-Truck Food drive! The turnout of the online and physical drive were a great success and will allow us to continue to make a difference in the lives of Greenwich residents,” says Neighbor to Neighbor.
